Show Update

Along with my new job (mentioned in the previous post) come some new responsibilities. I have a conference to go to that conflicts with the Harbor East Fine Arts & Music Festival this Saturday. It's too bad. I was looking forward to one last summer show and to see how this one turned out. But there will be lots of other Charm City Craft Mafia there.

While it may seem early to be talking about holiday shows, those in the biz know it's not. I've already got three on the schedule, the Bazaart Show at the American Visionary Art Museum on November 24. Then there's the Holiday Heap show put on by the Charm City Craft Mafia December 1. And the Squidfire guys are also putting on a Holiday show, which sounds like it's going ot be really cool with performances on December 9. I'm not sure that I'll do anymore than that. If BUST ever gets around to putting out a date I'd like to do that and see some people in NY, but it's probably going to conflict with an existing show above.

Meat on Swords

I haven't been updating a lot lately because this have been a little hectic. In the real world, I have switched jobs. I don't talk about my "real" career much here because that's not what the blog is about. But I have a degree in public health and I just started a new position that I'm really happy with. It's only been two days, but it feels good.
Aside from changes jobs, last Thursday I lead the rock star life. Thanks to the awesome Christa of itKnits, a whole bunch of mafia members went to the opening Fogo de Chao for FREE and had a crazy, meat-tastic time! Men were rushing at us with meat skewered on swords. And no, I'm not exaggerating. I was laughing quite a bit. I'm not much of a meat eater, but I nibbled on different cuts of beef. Plus, the salad bar was amazing, fresh marinated mozzarella balls, sun dried tomatoes, asparagus, mmm. Many of the mafiosos are vegetarian and even they were stuff when we left.
Sarah of Fort Cloudy came prepared with her camera and took some hilarious pictures. There’s me below appraising my meat. You had to grab it up with tongs. And there's George too, wearing an
appropriate shirt, I think, looking a little more excited about his meat. (Dirty?) Yes, we certainly made our fair share of jokes.

The Charm City Craft Mafia is at it again: Holiday Heap

Holiday Heap is coming December 1st! Following the success of our Pile of Craft show in June, Baltimore's Charm City Craft Mafia is hosting a holiday show, Holiday Heap, a juried indie/alternative craft fair for Baltimore's holiday shoppers. The event will be held indoors at St. John's Church, located at 2640 St. Paul St, Baltimore, MD 21218, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM. Each participant will have a space 8 ft. We're looking for vendors, so check out www.charmcitycraftmafia.com for more information and to apply. The application deadline is October 1, 2007!

Who wouldn't want to come to a show with all of these kooks and cuties?

More weekend projects

Finally, finally I put my serger to use. The classes I went to really helped me get oriented to it. The threading wasn't so bad and I just used two stiches--the four thread overlock and a rolled stitch. So I whipped up a skirt made from some t-shirts that George's parent's brought back from vacations. It's not that he didn't like the shirts, but for some reason is parents still think he wears XL shirts like he did in high school. In reality he wears a small, or if it's American Apparel, a medium. So I put the t-shrits to good use. I just needed two shirts to make a skirt so I choose one from China featuring the Great Wall and one from Costa Rica featuring an exploding volcano. I cut up eight pannels and put them all together. Then I did the waistband with elastic and finished the hem with a roll. It's may first clothing constuction in a long time. The serger made it really easy, but there's still some things I'd change so it was a learning experience. Next I want to try a skirt pattern I found in a vintage book. Again, I think the serger will make it go quickly.
Anyway, the finished product is below. The front and back--the little wonky part on the back is just because I was sitting on it all scrunched up.

I also made two pillows. I've been wanting to make some new pillows for quite awhile. And now I really want a new couch. The pillows are both bade from scarves and I've got a bunch more that I think will look good together. Photos will come.
